work I was interested in exploring the experiences of the Westerners who travel to Vietnam to vacation and to live. In particular the way in which the actual country and culture confirms and confounds the imagined place. Travel and tourism are as much about validating constructed and idealized fantasies of cultures as they are about seeking discovery. We bring with us our historically and culturally based preconceptions about what we will find in a place and often whether those notions are correct (or still correct) we often are able to encounter them in fabricated spaces constructed by the tourist industry and the society at large. brief points in the flow of normal activity of stopped action and reflection. I feel these moments are emblematic of an existential divide that exists between people, reflective of the inherent singularity of individual’s experience. The photographs in this series describe the community of my family and friends, and the environs we inhabit. The people I photographed are intimates, either through relation or friendship. By describing their relationships to each other as well as myself, I am interested in illustrating the space in which people are connected to each other while remaining autonomous. The interiors describe a further distance that exists not only between the people, but also with the landscape that is inhabited. The wallpaper and fabrics that adorn the lived spaces, like the clothing that decorates the people, are illustrative of the social and cultural codes of the community. Embedded within the fabric of familiar adornments and social interactions are the mores that affect and reflect the behavior of the participatory peoples.
